Why is it important to wash and sanitize spinach?

It is well known that for health and hygiene, all food before being consumed or cooked must be washed and disinfected, since thanks to this we can prevent diseases such as salmonella, staph or E.coli.

These are the result of food poisoning caused by hundreds of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms found in the food we eat every day.

Believe it or not, avoiding this type of infection or any other illness caused by food is possible, and the best way to do it is by properly washing and disinfecting what you put in your mouth.

But many times we do not know how this act should be carried out, especially in vegetables as delicate as spinach.

Washing and disinfecting spinach is a very simple task, but very careful, since many times the disinfectant is abused and this causes discoloration of our vegetables.

Steps to wash spinach

  • Remove the stem from the leaves: The stems of spinach are often very fibrous and can cause a kind of cramp in the teeth, a sensation that nobody likes and one of the main reasons why they avoid eating this vegetable. Avoid this unpleasant sensation by removing the stem, even without it it will be easier for you to wash them.
  • Rinse the spinach: This is an act that must always be done, wash one by one of the leaves in a small stream of water in order to remove as much soil as you can; it does not necessarily have to be all.
  • Put them in a container: Take a container where the spinach will fit well, fill it with enough water so that the spinach can float.
  • Disinfectant: add a little bleach or disinfectant, an approximate of three drops will be enough.

Follow this technique to disinfect

  • Stir: With your hands or a scoop, mix the disinfectant well with the water and bleach and let them rest for approximately 5 minutes, this will make the remaining soil fall off completely.
  • Remove them: Carefully, trying not to stir the water, remove the spinach trying to drain them and thus you will not pick up the dirt that fell on them and is now at the bottom of the container.
  • Eye: if you move them a lot you will cause the earth to rise again and stick to the leaves.
  • Lists: once cleaned and drained, they are now ready to use as you wish.
